If a tree grows out of my body. Ewww. What if I'm going to hell because I've sinned too much. I've thought, 'A punishment may be the image of a tree growing out of body.' Wasn't it in Mad Max? The finale where Thor character is stuck like a skewer. The sin of living as the nutrients of the tree. Isn't it scary?
내 몸에서 나무가 자란다면. 상상만 해도 으웩. 죄가 너무 많아서 지옥에 간다면 어떡할까. 그런 생각을 해봤다. '신체에서 나무가 자라는 형상이 형벌일지도 몰라.' 매드맥스에서도 나오지 않았나. 토르 캐릭터가 꼬챙이처럼 꽂아있는 피날레. 나무의 양분이 되어 살아가는 죄. 두렵지 않은가?

지옥. 얼마나 가혹한 벌일까. 짐작하건대 이보다 끔찍할 거다. 다만, 육목의 형태라면 퇴비가 되겠거니 싶다. 뼈와 피를 양분 삼은 나무는 죄의 크기만큼 자라나고, 무한히 옥죄일 것이다. 끝없는 속죄의 시간.

자연 앞에서는 인간의 구조물도 한낱일 뿐. 12세기에 지워진 이곳은 그 유명한 캄보디아 앙코르 와트 유적지, 타 프롬 사원. 경관이 다름없다. 범인은 스펑 나무. 일명 기생식물로, 다른 나무나 건물 안으로도 뿌리를 내린다.
어느 날, 날아온 홀씨가 틈 하나에 뿌리내려 완전히 짓눌러버리다니. 자연의 위대함은 거기에서 나오는 것이다. 이루 말할 수 없을 때. 만물에서 신의 초월을 느낀다. 그것도 잠시. 무서움이 스멀스멀 피어오른다.
The moment you set foot on it, you stare in awe. In the grip of overwhelming prospect. A place that has become a part of itself. As the trees grow and encroach on the temple, time passes slowly and mysteriously. It seems to have stopped, but it is beyond human comprehension. Perhaps, even after we are gone. All things flow, all things end, but still 敬畏*.

그곳에 발을 디디는 순간, 하염없이 바라보게 된다. 압도적인 전망에 사로잡힌 채 말이다. 그 자체로 일부가 되어버린 곳. 나무들이 자라며 사원을 잠식해오는 지금, 시간은 더디게, 신비롭게 흘러간다. 그저 멈춰버린 것 같지만, 인간의 이해를 넘어선다. 아마도, 우리가 자리를 떠난 후에도. 모든 것이 흐르고, 모든 것이 끝나지만, 여전한 敬畏*.
